Temporary Visa Options for Doctors & Nurses

Australian organisations (businesses, communities or government agencies) can sponsor overseas doctors to work in Australia for up to 4 years.

Temporary visas are the usual pathway to permanent residence for doctors who do not yet hold full medical registration in Australia. Overseas trained doctors can commence a period of supervised practice and formal assessment in Australia to meet the requirements for full medical registration.

Requirements for doctors:

  • Primary medical qualification acquired in a country other than Australia is considered valid for an Australian visa. Doctors who have gained their medical qualifications in Australia and are not Australian permanent residents can also apply for a visa.
  • Doctors who wish to practice in Australia must first be registered with the Medical Board in the State or Territory where they intend to practice. You must hold full medical registration if you seek permanent residency in Australia.
  • In evidence of full registration, you must submit one of the following certificates issued by the State or Territory Medical Board.
  • Full/unconditional/general medical registration.
  • Conditional specialist registration - this registration allows you to practice only in your particular speciality, with no further training or supervision requirements.
  • After the visa is granted, you must apply to Medicare Australia for a Medicare Provider Number if you plan to start general practice or prescribe drugs.

Requirements for nurses:

  • Nurses should have good health along with education and experience of certain level. Working in a health care or a hospital necessitates a nurse to qualify a health examination.
  • In order to work in Australia Nurses have to be evaluated either by ANMC (Australian Nursing & Midwifery Council) or State or Territory regulatory body of the area in which they intend to work.
