The article focuses on the relevant issues to keep in mind and is supposed to be used as a guide to entering and staying in Hungary. In a country where immigration policies are somewhat tight for non-EU citizens, you have to get it right.
Visa for short visit :
According to the Hungarian Immigration policies, a short stay is one that does not go beyond three months. It is instructive to note that Hungary is a member of the European Union and it is obliged to allow free movement of every national from any EU member state. This implies that they will not require a visa to enter the country, but will only be supposed to present their identification to show that they belong to a nation in the EU.
Along with the citizens of the EU region, other countries also enjoy visa waivers for short stays – no more than 90 days. Such countries are Australia, the USA, New Zealand, Canada and some Asian countries. The only requirements for nationals from these countries are that they are not supposed to engage in any economic activity during their stay. Coming to the nationals neither in the EU region nor nationals from the countries with a visa waiver, they will be required to hold a valid passport with an expiry of a minimum of six months before the day of departure from Hungary.
Residence permits :
When it comes to the residence, the Hungarian government seems to be very keen in ensuring that it knows the location of every immigrant. As a result, any foreigner intending to stay in Hungary for more than one month and does not check-in in a hotel or any other public lodging facility is supposed to notify the authorities, the regional alien policing or the local government, about their place of stay.
For the foreigners who hold a residence permit, they are supposed to send the same notification to the authorities and to keep them updated on any changes in the locations of stay. The notification should be done within the first three days of touching down at Hungary. The process of obtaining a residence permit for the non-EU citizen is a daunting one and can take long to be approved. You will be better placed if you want to start a business in Hungary that will benefit you as well as the Hungarian citizens.
If you choose to study in Hungary and have secured a place in a recognized institution in Hungary, you can be eligible for a residence permit. You will have to prove that you can comfortably pay for the tuition fees and can afford accommodation and the cost of living in Hungary.
Employment Visas and Work Permits :
The acquisition of a work permit for EU nationals is a thing of the past since Hungary is now a member of the European Union. They can work in Hungary without a permit. The same cannot be said of the citizens from non-EU nations. To work in Hungary, you are required to apply for an employment visa at the Hungarian consulate in your country. Before you become eligible for the visa, your prospective employer should obtain and send you a work permit to use it during the application.
As a requirement by the Hungarian Employment Agency, the job vacancy is to be advertised to check if any Hungarian national suits the position before it is given to citizens in other countries. Once it has been established that the job cannot be done by any Hungarian citizen, the employer sends the permit to the suitable applicant to use it when applying for an employment visa. During the application, the applicant will be tasked to prove that they have a prepared accommodation in Hungary and have the relevant documents.
A medical certificate will also be needed when applying for an employment visa. The certificate should be filled after an examination by a recognized physician in the home country of the applicant to check that they have a stable health. The issuance of the medical certificate should be within the last three months. A clean criminal record is a must have to able to work in Hungary. The government has taken prudent measures to ensure the security of its people.
For citizenship, foreigners who have been living and working in Hungary for at least eight years with a stable income are eligible. The application is made at the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Hungary.
