Visas :
This is a document that you will be required to hold during your short stay in Bulgaria. Some of the reasons for such short stays may be to assess the country before moving in or to collect relevant information about employment. The basic requirement for a visa is a valid passport. However, nationals from certain countries like the UK, USA, New Zealand, Austria, Andorra, Ireland, Estonia, Japan, Israel, Liechtenstein, the Vatican and Switzerland do not need a visa if they are staying for no more than one month.
For longer stays of up to 90 days, most citizens from many countries will need to hold a visa. Bulgaria being a member of the EU community allows for entry of citizens from the EU/EEA member states without necessarily requiring a visa. After Bulgaria joins the Schengen area, which is underway, members from the Schengen countries will have the same freedom of movement.
Permanent Residence :
To relocate and live in Bulgaria indefinitely, you will need to apply for the long-term permit also known as the D visa. The application is done at the Bulgarian Consulate in your country or at the Bulgarian Immigration offices in case you are already living in Bulgaria, holding the short stay visa. It is instructive to note that the long-stay visa is what will enable you to apply for the permanent residence permit.
Among the most important checks that you will have to pass, failure to which may lead to revocation of your application is the security check. With the rising cases of insecurity in many parts of the world, unless you have a clean criminal record, your application for permanent residence will not be approved. Another important requirement is a healthcare cover.
During your stay in Bulgaria, you will be required to prove that you have a health insurance cover to cater for every health-related expenses. These details should be provided during the application. Once you have met the mentioned conditions, proving that you can support your stay in Bulgaria, your application may be approved. You will have a higher chance of getting the permanent residence permit if you are immigrating for some specific reasons discussed below.
If you have secured a job offer to work in Bulgaria on a full-time basis with the contract stating no less than one year.
If you are planning on starting a business in Bulgaria with the intention of employing a minimum of ten Bulgarian citizens. You should prove that the business is legal. Besides, if you are an investor, you will be required to invest a specific amount of moment in the Bulgarian economy.
If you are starting a full-time study on a particular course offered by a registered institution in Bulgaria. You must have secured a place in the institution first.
If you are a family member or a registered partner of a Bulgarian citizen or permanent resident
If you are retired and wish to spend your time in Bulgaria. You will be required to have enough funds to support your stay.
To be eligible for the permanent residence permit, you should have lived in Bulgaria for five consecutive years while holding your long-stay permit legally. However, this period can be shorter is you are married to a Bulgarian citizen for a minimum of two years. You will not have any period of being a resident if you are a child born of a Bulgarian citizen or a permanent resident, or if you are willing to invest more than USD 250,000 in Bulgaria.
Work permits :
Are you planning to work in Bulgaria? If yes, you will need a work permit. You should have your work permit processed before you leave your country of origin. According to the immigration policies in Bulgaria, you will not have your work permit application processed while you are in Bulgaria. Keep in mind that you will need a residence permit during your stay working in Bulgaria. If you decide to move with your family, they will not be permitted to work in the country.
