Located in the Southern Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is a beautiful country made up of two islands. While the size of the country can be compared to that of the United Kingdom, the country has a population of just over four million and over 30,000,000 sheep. The big difference in the two populations makes the country very remote. The country has spectacular geographical features and unique wildlife like the flightless kiwi.
Every year, many young New Zealanders leave the country in the pursuit of various things never to come back. Every year, many young New Zealanders leave the country in the pursuit of various things never to come back. This has been affecting the development of the country and the government in an attempt to maintain its population and skills has been courting immigrants to fill the places. The government increased its efforts of outsourcing for skills especially after the earthquake disaster in 2011 that destroyed Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island and the most populated at that time.
The shortage in the skills in technical areas such as construction and medicine has created many opening for immigrants to New Zealand. The process has been made easier to encourage immigration. The country is known to have an excellent standard of living owing to the stable economy and low levels of crime. We shall look at the immigration system and the types of visas you can apply for.
In 1987, the New Zealand government introduced a point-based system to give a chance to immigrants from various countries. This was targeted at reducing the preference on immigrants from Northern America, Britain, and Europe basing on their race. The new system was rather focused on getting immigrants with skills, good character and who would have a positive effect on the economy and the society at large.
The result of the new system of immigration saw the inflow of immigrants from different ethnicities and races from about 120 countries. The number of the approved immigrants rose consistently up to 1995 where a limit was set at 25,000. In general, New Zealand has the highest number of citizens born outside the country.
In 2009, an immigration act was passed that had a different definition of visas than it was before. A visa allowed the holder to travel or stay in New Zealand unlike before where a visa allowed entry and a permit was required for staying. The increased number of people interested to live in New Zealand and invest has made the process of visa application and approval lengthy and somewhat daunting. What are the types of visas in New Zealand?
If you hold this type of visa, you can travel and live in New Zealand indefinitely. At the time of entry, you should meet the travel requirements. Depending on the category of your entry, you will be subject to specific conditions. For instance, those who enter New Zealand under the investor category are required to invest a certain amount of money in the country within a specified period.
For permanent residence visas, the successful applicants will be able to travel and stay in New Zealand at any time without any conditions. In order to be eligible, you will need to be a holder or have held a resident visa for a minimum of three months, have held the resident visa consecutively for two years as well as met one of the five commitments to New Zealand criteria. Also, you have to have good character and not a threat to national security in any way. You can show your commitment to New Zealand by investing in the country, spending enough time in the country, paying tax, or by owning a business.
Permanent residence can be granted if you have been residing in New Zealand for two years. Different categories of people can obtain the status of permanent residence if they fall in the following categories:
Skilled migrant category which includes skilled professionals in specific fields
Residence from work – people who have been working for a minimum of two years holding a work to residence visa
Investment category – for investors who want to invest in New Zealand with sufficient investment funds
Business category – for people wishing to start their business or take over another in New Zealand
Samoan Quota Category – for the citizens of Samoa
Pacific Access Quota – for the citizens of Tuvalu, Tonga or Kiribati
Family Category – for parents, children, or partners of the holders of residence visas in New Zealand
There is an exception for the citizens of Australia. Provided they pass the health and character checks; they can live and work in New Zealand indefinitely without necessarily needing a residence visa.
While o your quest to get a visa to New Zealand, beware of fake visas sold by imposters. Once you are found with such permits, you will not be granted entry in the country. Your character and health should meet their requirements too.
