You don't want to be denied a visa, if you need one, for not knowing what was required of you. This article will serve as a guide to acquiring the right visa, for your purpose of visiting Finland.
Visas :
As mentioned before, Finland is a very welcoming country, especially if you are visiting for a short period of no more than three months. As a matter of fact, many nationals do not require a visa if they are staying for less than 90 days in Finland. An automatic exemption from a visa, of course, applies to all citizens from the EEA region and the EU member states. All they have to show during entry into Finland is an identification card only.
Other countries included in the exemption of a visa when entering Finland are Switzerland, Canada, the USA, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and most South American countries. While the citizens of the mentioned countries may not require a visa to enter Finland, they have to pass the security checks, that is, having a clean criminal record, and be of good health. Other nationals from the countries not included in the visa waiver are supposed to apply for a visa in their countries of origin at the Finnish Embassy or Consulate before visiting Finland.
Residence Permits :
When it comes to a residence in Finland, we are talking about staying in the country for more than three months. The reasons for such longer stays may include studying, working, or even living in Finland. To be able to reside in Finland, you will need to obtain a residence permit regardless of your nationality. Just like any visa, the application is made at the Finnish Consulate or Embassy in your country. However, if you are already in Finland, you can get the residence permit from the local police station near you.
Is there any exemption for a residence permit? Yes. The Nordic countries have an agreement of letting their citizens reside in any state within the region. Also, spouses of any Finnish national or a citizen of another Nordic country has the right to a permanent residence permit regardless of their citizenship. Depending on the purpose of staying in Finland, you will be required to provide supporting documents during the application of a residence permit.
For instance, if you are moving to Finland for employment, you will need to provide proof of the job offer in Finland as well as accommodation arrangements when you get to Finland. If your family is joining you to Finland, you will have to prove that you have sufficient finances to support their stay in Finland. Another important document is a medical certificate for everyone moving to Finland. The residence permit is given for a maximum of one year for temporary employment and up to five years when the employment is on a permanent basis. In both cases, the permit is renewable.
Employment permits :
Nationals from the EEA region, the European Union, the Nordic countries, including Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Iceland do not require a work permit if they get a job offer in Finland. However, citizens of the states that joined the EU in May 2004 are required to register with the employment office before taking up work in Finland. The permit such citizens will need for the reasons of job application will be a residence permit only.
Nationals from all the other countries will be required to apply for a work permit that doubles as a residence permit too. Alternatively, their employers can obtain the permit for them. If the applicants are still in their home country where they are citizens or permanent residents, they are supposed to visit the Finnish Embassy with all the required documents including the one showing evidence of the job offer in Finland. If the applicant is residing in Finland during the time of application, then the forms and details should be submitted to the employment office or the Finnish local police.
Permanent Residence :
After staying in Finland for a while, you may develop a likeness of the country and may want to settle. For eligibility, you are supposed to have live in Finland for three consecutive years with evidence of a clean criminal record and integration into the culture of the Finnish people. Later, after staying in Finland for at least six years, you may proceed to apply for Finnish citizenship.
