There are many reasons why one would want to leave his or her country for permanent resident in another. Every year, hundreds of people move to France for many reasons such as running from war, marriage to a French partner, and long term career pursuit among other reasons. The process will require special documents depending on the status with which you are entering the country.

The most primary requirement to be eligible for an opportunity to live in France permanently, you have to have stayed in the country for at least five years. This period is reduced if you are a parent to a French national or you are married to a French partner. Better yet, you can apply for French citizenship. Although both options for permanent residency and citizenship allow you to stay in the country for long, there are key differences between the two that should not be taken for granted.
Permanent Residence in France
If your application for a permanent visa (carte de resident) is successful, you will be able to live in France for ten years, after which you are required to renew your permit. The qualification for this permit will depend on many things including the main reason for your stay in France, employment, and your financial stability to cater for the cost of living in the country. You will need to prove that you are able to live in the country without dependence.
Can you lose the right to hold the permanent visa? Yes. In France, permanent residents are not permitted to leave the country for more than two consecutive years. Failure to comply can leave to the revocation of your permit and possible deportation. Before you leave the country, be sure to check the regulations and policies as they change regularly.
Family Members and Partners
If you have a family member in France who already has a permanent residence status, the term for your eligibility can be reduced to three years. This applies to when you are the parent of a French national child who has a temporary residence. Similarly, if one or both parents are French nationals, you will be eligible for a permanent residence permit.
The other category of people that have an exemption when applying for permanent residence in France is those married to a France national for more than three years. If you fall into this category, you will be able to acquire your permanent residence visa immediately irrespective of where you were during the marriage. If the marriage is less than three years, you will be required to hold a residence permit first before applying for permanent residence.
EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens
If you are an EU/EEA/Swiss national,, there are exemptions that apply during your application for permanent residency in France. If you have stayed in France for five or more years, you will be eligible to for the permanent visa without needing to prove your income or employment. As a matter of fact, you will not need this permit unless you want to qualify for state services such as the housing financial aid.A family member of the citizens from the EU, Switzerland, or the EEA can also apply for permanent residence in France. The permit will remain valid even after the divorce of the partner or death of the family member.
How to apply for French Permanent Residence
The application for a permanent visa can be done in your country in the respective consulate offices or the embassy. You will be given the information about the required documents depending on your personal situation. Such documents may include your employment contract, birth or marriage certificates, and medical reports to name a few.
The process of approving your application takes long, and as such, you should begin the process well in advance. With different conditions you meet, you can apply for either the French permanent residence or the EU long-term residence. The latter permit comes with additional benefits that allow you to move and live within the EU countries freely.
When you opt for the French citizenship, you will not be required to give up your original citizenship since you can have dual citizenship. There are things that you are not permitted to do with a permanent residence visa that you could do when you are a citizen, such as voting and holding a public office.
