We will give you a guide on how to live, study and work in Poland.
Visas and Entry :
As a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area, Poland has relaxed requirements for citizens from these regions. Such citizens can enter Poland with relevant documents showing their identity and citizenship only. They do not need a visa if they are staying in Poland for no more than three months. However, if these Nationals plan on staying for more than three months, they will be required to apply for a temporary residence permit or a residence permit.
Citizens from certain nations such as the USA, New Zealand, and Australia, among others, do not need a visa if they stay for up to 90 days. For the nationals from the other countries with no exemptions, they are supposed to hold a valid visa during entry and stay in the country for the three months. The Polish Immigration policy stipulates that immigrants should show evidence of having financial abilities to support their comfortable stay in the country.
If you are moving to Poland for education, you will need to show proof of enough money to fund your tuition and accommodation.
Residence permits :
Acquiring residence permit if you are not a citizen of any EU country is quite difficult. Many immigrants acquire the permit if they are moving to Poland to start a business, study or found a job. If you are planning to start a business in Poland, it must be a legal business and should be geared towards benefiting the Polish citizens too. If you are immigrating for the reasons of education, you will need to produce a letter from a recognized Polish institution indicating that they have a place for you. Unless you have a valid job offer, you will not immigrate to Poland on the basis of employment.
On the other hand, citizens of the EU member state are granted residence permits if they wish to stay for more than one year. The requirement will be to prove that they can support their stay in Poland. Also, they are supposed to have a valid health insurance cover and pass the security checks with clean criminal records. The family members of such citizens are also eligible for residence. The permits are issued for five years after which they can be renewed for another five years.
The application is done by the local authorities in Poland with all relevant documents showing that you are in the country legally. Depending on your purpose of stay, you will also be required to provide supporting documents.
Work Permits :
Poland does not have a uniform policy for obtaining a work permit for EU nationals. Those from Great Britain, Sweden and Ireland do not require a work permit to engage in any economic activity in Poland, they only need a residence visa only. The citizens from many other EU nations such as Belgium, Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Iceland, among others will need to apply for work permits first.
For non-EU citizens, they will have to obtain a residence visa after the presentation of a ‘work promise’ certificate at the Polish consul in their home countries. This certificate is obtained by the prospective employer from the local Labor Office. The residence permit granted for the reasons of employment usually lasts for one year, and the holder is allowed to renew. When the Polish Immigration Department is issuing work permits, priority is given to the EU nationals over the nationals from other countries. Moreover, there are specific jobs in the public sector are meant for Polish citizens.
Permanent Residence and Citizenship :
To qualify for permanent residence in Poland, you must have lived in the country for a minimum of three years, had a clean criminal record, established strong ties with Poland, and demonstrated integration with the Polish culture. Once you have held the permanent residence permit for at least five years, you may apply for Polish citizenship. One is also eligible for permanent residence basing on their birth, descent, and registered marriage.
