Just like Estonia and other European countries that joined the European Union in May 2004, immigration laws underwent a rather significant change. The policies that were once very strict on other European countries become relaxed, and that saw many people moving to Slovakia to start a new life. The peace in the country, employment opportunities and the free market that favors business are some of the main reasons for immigration to Slovakia.
Therefore, if you are planning to move to Slovakia anytime soon, you will need to understand what changed and what stayed the same after it joined the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA). You probably know by now that if you have the right documents when traveling to a foreign country, your passage will be streamlined. You probably know by now that if you have the right documents when traveling to a foreign country, your passage will be streamlined. That is what this piece focuses on – to give you the information you need about immigrating to Slovakia. Make no mistake; use this article as a guide since the immigration regulations change every time.
Entry Visas :
One of the major aspects of immigration that changed when Slovakia joined the EU and the EEA region is the need for an entry visa. Many countries in the area became exempted from the requirement, and so the citizens of the other EU states and those in the EEA were permitted to enter Slovakia with their identification cards only freely. The free movement within the EU region is covered in the Citizens of the EU Act. The same privilege applies to the Slovakian citizens from the date it joined the EU. They too can enter any EU country without needing a visa.
The citizens of other nations like Canada, Great Britain, the USA, and South Africa are exempted from the entry visa requirement if they intend to stay in the country for less than 30 days. However, the citizens of all the other countries are required to hold an entry visa on their way into Slovakia. The application is supposed to be done at the Slovakian consular offices in the applicant's country of origin. The process takes up to five days to be completed.
Temporary Residence Permit :
If you are planning to reside in Slovakia for more than three months, you will be required by law to hold an interim residence permit. This license identifies you as a legal foreign resident, without which you may be charged for staying in the country illegally. Such purposes of traveling to Slovakia that will need you to hold a temporary residence permit include studying, working and starting a business in Slovakia. It is crucial to have the purpose of your stay well laid out during the application of the temporary permit to reduce complexities and the waiting time before the approval. The visa lasts for one year and may be renewed after expiry.
The citizens of any EU country are also supposed to hold a temporary residence permit when they stay in the country for more than three months. They can make the application at a Slovakian Consular in their countries or the Foreign Police if they are already in Slovakia. The permits issued to EU nationals lasts for five years and may be renewed after that. Among the things, you will need when applying for this permit is that reason for your stay, evidence of funds to cater for your stay in Slovakia, criminal background check, and a health certificate indicating that you are not infected with any contagious disease.
Permanent Residence :
When you obtain the status of permanent residence, you are allowed to stay in the country for an unlimited time. This way, you will be able to study, be employed and invest and start a business without many regulations. In many instances, for eligibility, the foreign applicant for permanent residence must have held a temporary residence permit for a minimum of ten years. If you are moving to Slovakia after retirement, you will have to prove that you have a steady legal income to finance your stay in Slovakia.
The application is made at the police department in Slovakia. It is a standard practice that the applicant will be granted a permanent residence permit for the first five years, and after showing good character and integration with the society, they may be awarded full permanent residence status. As it was the case with temporary residence, you will need to provide some documents like a medical certificate, a record of your criminal background, evidence of having enough assets and money for a comfortable stay in Slovakia, among others.
If you are a permanent residence holder and wish to have your family over to Slovakia, the only family members allowed to hold the same status are close relatives and partners. You will be required to be their sponsor during their application for permanent residence proving that you have enough funds to support them while they reside in Slovakia. Their individual records of health and criminal background will be required.
