Ireland
The republic of Ireland has gained popularity as a favorable destination for immigrants over the past decade owing to a rather stable economy and ease in the immigration process, especially for skilled workers. Looking at the trend in many countries, the need for a skilled workforce has led to ease the immigration process, and Ireland is one of them. It will be true to state that to increase your chances of getting a visa to a specific country, improve your skills.
It is instructive to note that the Republic of Ireland is a separate state from Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is a constituent state of the United Kingdom, and, therefore, you have to meet UK immigration requirements to enter the country. In this article, we shall consider the Republic of Ireland, simply known as Ireland.

In an effort to make the immigration process easy, Ireland does not use a point based system to gauge the eligibility of immigrants, rather, the immigration department focuses on the skills and expertise needed by the government when granting permits. Being a member of the European Union, Ireland has a relaxed policy for immigrants from the EU member states. Such citizens can enter Ireland, stay, work and study without requiring any permit. However, for immigrants from non-EU nations, a visa will be required for entry into Ireland for whatever purpose.
Types of Irish Visas
In this section, we shall consider the types of visas available for entry into Ireland. As mentioned earlier, Ireland has a strategy to increase the number of skilled personnel in the country, and so, most of the permits that allow staying and working are granted on the same basis and for family members.
General Employment Permit
This type of permit granted by the Irish government based on job offers for the immigrants allowing the foreign nationals to work in Ireland in a role playing no less than €30, 000 a year; with some applicable exceptions. This permit can be applied for by either an employer or a worker.
How long can one stay in Ireland with the general employment permit? Initially, the permit is offered for two years, and upon the expiration, the holder can apply for an extension of another three years. Once holding the visa for five years, the immigrant can apply for long term residence in Ireland provided your character, among other things, is good.
Before the application of this visa, the immigrant should have an existing job offer and have the required skills, and experience suited for the job. When it is the employer applying, they must be willing to employ the migrant and pay them directly. Before the job is offered to any immigrant, the job should be advertised to workers who are within the European Economic Area (EEA).
Critical Skills Work Permit
Under this category, immigrants are allowed to stay and work in Ireland, if they get an offer to work in a role that pays no less than €60,000 per year or a minimum of €30,000 a year if the job is listed on the Ireland’s Highly Skilled Occupations List. As it was the case with the general employment permit, either the worker or the employer can apply for this permit.
The length of stay under this permit is two years after which one may apply for Stamp 4 which means that they can stay and work in Ireland on a permanent basis. Only qualified immigrants with the required skills and an existing job offer can apply for this permit. It should be clearly stated that the contact for the employment will take a minimum of two years.
Job offers to the immigrants under this scheme are not necessarily required to be advertised within the EEA first. When the employer applies, they should be willing to pay the minimum salary and do it directly. As such, employment agencies cannot apply for this permit.
Dependent/partner Employment Permit
This permit is designated for family members of the holders of the different work permits to live and work in Ireland. Therefore, to become eligible, the applicants should have a family member holding a work permit, and their stay extends to the expiry of the work permit their relatives hold. After the required minimum period, holders of the work permits may apply for permanent residence, and that affects their dependents too.
If the family members get a job offer, the minimum required salary should be the Ireland’s minimum wage and should work for a minimum of ten hours a week. Usually, it is required that the employment contract should last for at least one year. The relative should either be married in a civil partnership or unmarried children below the age of 18 years. Another requirement would be to prove that there are enough funds to support the dependents or partner who should have good character as well.
