Education System in Latvia

The Latvian education system consists of secondary education and higher education. General education in Latvia in total lasts 12 years consisting of necessary 9-years basic education with 3-years secondary education.

There is academic and professional education in Latvia. Most of the institution of higher education offer both academic and professional higher education qualification.

Academic higher education programmes are more inclined to prepare graduates for independent research as well as to provide theoretical background for professional activities. Academic education programmes are executed according to the national standards of academic education. They contain a thesis at the end of each stage and lead to Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree.

Professional higher education degree programmes are tended to provide in-depth knowledge in particular fields, preparing graduates for design or improvement of system, products and technologies as well as prepare them for creative, research and teaching activities in this fields.

Duration of Bachelor’s programme may be 3 or 4 years. The total length of full time Bachelor’s and Master’s is not less than 5 years. Doctoral studies last 3-4 full time years.

Studies in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy professional studies (5 and 6 year studies), are equal to the master's degree and graduates of these programmes can continue their studies in doctoral level programmes.

The degree of master or equivalent is required for admission to doctoral studies. A doctoral degree is awarded after public defense of a doctoral thesis and successfully passed exams in the chosen scientific discipline. The doctoral thesis has to include results of original research and new insights in the scientific discipline. The duration of doctoral study is 3-4 years.

Education Cost to Study in Latvia

The cost of studies depends on the institution and the programme being followed. The range is not less than 2,000 EUR per year in certain bachelor’s degree programmes (3-4 years of studies) to 15,000 EUR per year for a degree in Dentistry (5 years) to 25,600 EUR for Executive MBA degree.

Application Procedure for Latvia

To study in Latvia you need a Student visa. Read the step by step Latvia Student Visa Requirements and process with the list of required documents and be careful because a single mistake can be the reason of your visa rejection.

Step-1: Original documents required from students (Apostille)

ESL Application form

Passport

Photo with white background (35/ 45 size)

All educational documents- X, XII/PUC and Bachelors Certificates and Marksheet (Translated into English)

Provisional certificate not accepted

Grade should be 50% and above

IELTS, TOFEL, Medium of Instruction certificate or any English Proficiency Certificate

CV

Step-2: Upon receiving the above documents, ESL will process admission

Step-3: The applicant will receive a Conditional Acceptance Letter and Invoice for paying Application fee

It is one of the most important step of the Latvia Student Visa requirements, you should be careful while transferring the fee.

Payment will be made direct to the University’s Account

Application fee – around 180 -300 Euro -Depends on course and university

Non-refundable

Step-4: The applicant should face a skype interview or online tests

Some Universities do not have any admission tests.

For non-confident students -ESL will help in online tests. ESL will give training for Skype interview

Step-5: The Educational Documents will be submitted to the Academic Information Centre (AIC) for verification by the university.

Duration -minimum 2 weeks to maximum 4 weeks.

Some universities do not require AIC

Step-6: Upon receiving AIC statement, university will provide the following:

Final admission letter

Study Contract

Invoice for tuition fee – around 2000 -3400 Euro -Depends on course and university

Invoice for Security Deposit – around 500-700 Euro – Depends on course and university

Tuition fee and Security fee is refundable, in case of visa rejection.

Step-7:After successful payment of Tuition fee, Application for Residence Permit. Only the Bachelor level Applicants will send the following original documents to ESL by DHL or courier. For their Further processing of Latvia Student Visa Process.
